Indonesian Islamic clerics on Thursday backed President Prabowo Subianto’s policies, including his stance on rising tensions in the Gulf, saying the measures aim to safeguard Indonesia’s unity and sovereignty.
Several leaders of Islamic boarding schools, senior figures from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), and representatives of Islamic mass organizations expressed their support during a joint press conference at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta late Thursday.
The briefing followed a gathering between Prabowo and Muslim clerics and scholars at the palace earlier in the evening.
Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani said the president had stressed that his policies were aimed at maintaining the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia.
"The president said that what he is doing is for the unity of the Republic of Indonesia, the integrity of the state, and the sovereignty of the nation,” Muzani told reporters after the meeting.
He said clerics and religious leaders viewed the president’s stance as a step taken on the right path.
Caretaker of the Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Tambakberas, Jombang, East Java, KH Mohammad Hasib Wahab Hasbullah said he supported the government’s economic programs, describing them as efforts to improve public welfare.
"In essence, I support and appreciate the economic programs, and hopefully in the near future our people will become more prosperous,” Hasib said.
Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) KH Marsudi Syuhud said the government’s policies reflected strong commitment to protecting national interests amid tensions in the Gulf and the wider Middle East.
"President Prabowo will make every effort, first, to protect our nation and, second, to contribute to building global peace,” Marsudi said.
Chairman of Wahdah Islamiyah KH Muhammad Zaitun Rasmin said he was deeply moved by the president’s explanation during the meeting.
He said Prabowo had expressed determination to pursue any opportunity that could benefit Indonesians, Muslims worldwide, and people in conflict-affected regions, including Palestine.
