This was marked by the signing of an agreement by the Indonesian Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, and the Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, Yasushi Kaneko, in Tokyo on Monday.
According to a press release of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, the agreement includes joint tourism promotion at international exhibitions, tourism product development, destination management, and efforts to strengthening sustainable tourism.
The partnership also includes cooperation on flight and travel services, human resource development through training and expertise exchange, increasing connectivity, and enhanced tourist safety and security.
A joint working group will be formed to draft an action plan and monitor the ongoing implementation of the cooperation. Through this partnership, Indonesia and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to innovative, sustainable, and mutually beneficial collaboration to drive tourism growth and bolster ties between the two nations.
Minister Wardhana noted that Japan is one of Indonesia's strategic partners in tourism development. In 2025, Indonesia welcomed more than 380,000 Japanese tourists, a roughly 12 percent increase from the previous year.
Furthermore, she stressed the importance of air connectivity to boost tourist mobility between the two countries.
Currently, Tokyo–Jakarta and Tokyo–Bali flight services serve as the backbone of tourist mobility between Japan and Indonesia.
Nevertheless, there are still significant opportunities to establish direct flights from other major Japanese cities to various destinations in Indonesia, such as Yogyakarta.
In addition, the minister also outlined Indonesia's plan to send skilled workers abroad, including those working in the tourism sector.
She assessed that the human resources development initiatives agreed upon by Indonesia and Japan can serve as a platform to prepare these skilled workers.
