Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has moved to clarify confusion surrounding the use of Indonesia Game Rating System (IGRS) labels on titles sold via the Steam platform.

It stressed that several ratings currently visible online have not been verified by the government.

The ministry's Director of Digital Ecosystem Development Sonny Hendra Sudaryana stated that the classifications circulating on Steam are based on a self-declaration mechanism by publishers rather than official IGRS verification, which is overseen by the ministry.

“The ratings circulating are not the results of official IGRS classifications. This could trigger misunderstanding in the public, especially regarding the age eligibility of a game,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

The clarification comes after a wave of criticism on Indonesian social media, where users highlighted glaring mismatches: adult-oriented games tagged as suitable for children aged three and above, while family-friendly titles were marked for ages 18+.

The controversy has reignited debate over digital consumer protection and platform accountability in Indonesia.

Sudaryana emphasized that under national regulations, digital businesses must provide accurate and non-misleading information to safeguard users, particularly minors.

The ministry findings suggest that IGRS labels have been applied without government oversight, leading to inconsistencies with the country’s legal framework.

Komdigi has announced plans to seek clarification directly from Steam and initiate talks to ensure compliance with Indonesian standards.

“We are asking the platform to make sure to provide the public only with accurate and accountable information. This is not only a matter of compliance but also a responsibility to protect users, especially children,” Sudaryana affirmed.

The ministry also pledged to strengthen the IGRS system itself, with improvements in verification and monitoring mechanisms aimed at building a more reliable classification framework.

Officials urged the public to rely on official sources and report irregularities through the ministry’s helpdesk channels helpdesk@igrs.id and komdigi.co.id.
