As head of the National Border Management Agency (BNPP), Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said the initiative follows President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to strengthen social justice, enhance regional resilience, and foster nationalism in peripheral communities.
In a statement on Friday, Karnavian said the target forms part of a broader plan to upgrade 400,000 homes for low-income households, describing the allocation as a significant step in advancing the government’s housing agenda.
He made the remarks during a visit to Siau Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro) Islands District in North Sulawesi, where authorities plan to renovate 1,000 uninhabitable houses under the Self-Help Housing Stimulus (BSPS) program.
“Among the priority areas is Sitaro, especially after the recent flash floods,” Karnavian said, noting that BNPP proposed the allocation and secured approval from the Ministry of Housing and Settlement (PKP).
He also announced plans to relocate 98 flood-affected households to a 2.5-hectare site prepared by the Sitaro district administration to ensure safer living conditions.
Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait, who accompanied the visit, said the government would begin implementing the project immediately to accelerate recovery efforts in the affected region.
“As directed by the president, we fully support BNPP’s initiative. Starting next week, we will begin renovating 1,000 homes in Sitaro to make them safe and livable,” he said.
Sirait said three key factors underpinned the decision to prioritize Sitaro: its strategic location in an outer region, persistent poverty levels, and the urgent need to address flood damage through concrete measures.
“These considerations form the basis of our policy,” he said.
