The ministry's head of communication and public information bureau, Aji Muhawarman, said on Monday that the phenomenon weakens the rain-cleansing effect, leading to increased air pollution due to stagnant air and temperature inversion, worsened by forest and land fires.
"Increases in temperature and environmental changes can also trigger the spread of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria, as puddles become breeding grounds for mosquitoes," he said.
He added that the phenomenon also deteriorates air and sanitation quality, increasing the risk of diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, and leptospirosis.
To mitigate these risks, the ministry urged the public to follow health protocols, including checking air quality through apps or websites, reducing outdoor activities, and closing ventilation when pollution levels are high.
"Use air filters indoors, avoid sources of pollution and cigarette smoke, and wear masks when air pollution is at hazardous levels," he added.
He also urged people to adopt clean and healthy lifestyles to keep their immune systems strong and to consult a medical professional if they experience symptoms, particularly respiratory issues.
Previously, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) said the term "Godzilla" is used to describe the potential severity of El Niño, including longer and drier drought periods.
Indonesia may experience prolonged cloudless and rainless days, although impacts may vary across regions.
BRIN has called on stakeholders to strengthen mitigation efforts, warning of drought risks in southern regions and flood risks in northeastern areas.
The National Food Agency has said the government is ensuring sufficient food supply and stable prices amid the prolonged dry season.
Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo also said his ministry has prepared around 400 water pumps to support farmers during this period.
