Jakarta (ANTARA) - Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo reinforced the government’s commitment to accelerating phase II development of schools under the tuition-free education program Sekolah Rakyat (People’s School), targeting completion at 97 locations across Indonesia by June.

Phase II primarily involves constructing permanent Sekolah Rakyat buildings, following the program’s implementation at existing government facilities designated as temporary school sites since last year.

"As the program has entered a crucial stage, it is vital that we all work hand in hand to pursue timely completion," the minister remarked at his office in Jakarta on Friday.

He emphasized the need for stronger daily coordination among all stakeholders to propel construction progress.

"As of April 14, only about 20 percent of development sites have reached 30–40 percent progress," Hanggodo said, noting that 70 projects remain below 30 percent, while four have yet to begin construction.

To reverse the unfavorable trend, he said the Ministry of Public Works would ramp up efforts from its units, particularly those overseeing strategic infrastructure, settlements, and highways.

"I will strive to ensure construction is completed at all 97 sites by June," he said, stressing his readiness to work around the clock to meet the target.

On March 26, the Ministry of Public Works assured the public of accelerated Sekolah Rakyat development at a total of 104 locations across 102 districts and cities in 32 provinces.

Each site, built on five to 10 hectares of land provided by local governments, is designed as an integrated school complex with technology-enabled classrooms, laboratories, libraries, digital learning hubs, and dormitories for students and teachers.

Supporting facilities such as canteens, clinics, sports courts, extracurricular spaces, and green areas are also included.

The government projects the Sekolah Rakyat program to serve up to 112,320 pupils from economically disadvantaged families once permanent buildings are completed.
