Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon emphasized that high-quality scripts are a crucial factor in determining the success of Indonesia’s film industry.

“One of the bottlenecks in our film industry is the screenplay and scriptwriting. Great films can only be realized if our scripts are strong,” Zon said during the SINEMA 2026 Screenplay Competition Award event on Monday.

He noted that well-crafted scripts can enhance the performance of actors and actresses while strengthening the messages that filmmakers aim to convey to audiences.

According to him, strong scripts also play a key role in helping Indonesian historical films stay longer in cinemas nationwide.

“In the context of historical films, the challenge is ensuring strong quality, and that quality begins with the script and screenplay,” he said.

Zon encouraged directors and screenwriters to develop more high-quality scripts across a broader range of genres beyond horror, including history, culture, and children’s stories.

He said these opportunities should be further explored to encourage filmmakers to produce more innovative works and strengthen Indonesia’s presence on the global stage.

In addition, Zon expressed hope that younger generations will not only learn about culture and history from books, but also through films that portray the nation’s heritage and the struggles of its heroes.

“Film is one of the most accessible ways to introduce our culture to the world. It can encompass various forms of cultural expression - from acting, music, and performing arts to language, oral traditions, culinary arts, and even fashion,” he said.
