Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that the sharper the criticism from academics toward the government, the more it would be welcomed.

According to him, such sharp criticism allows the government to reassess and reexamine policies that have been issued.

“The government never sees those who criticize as enemies. Especially in my case, as I come from an academic background,” he said when met here on Saturday.

He added that President Prabowo Subianto is also very open to criticism towards the government. Therefore, in principle, academics are free to express criticism.

Regarding constitutional law expert from Andalas University, Feri Amsari, who was reported to the police over his criticism of the government’s food self-sufficiency policy, Minister Mahendra said the police are processing the report as part of their duties and functions. As such, they cannot refuse to accept the report.

However, he said he would advise the police to conduct clarification regarding the report.

“The complainant must be heard first, and Mr. Feri Amsari can be summoned for questioning. It is not possible for a report to be filed and the police is not doing anything, as they could face a complaint,” he said.

Previously, Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani stated that criticism should prioritize respect in response to incidents where criticism has led to police reports.

She said that criticism must be understood by both those who deliver it and those who receive it. Critics should express their views appropriately, and those being criticized should be prepared to accept it.

“The law must be enforced fairly, but we must also uphold ethics in delivering criticism in a polite manner,” she said after a plenary meeting at the parliamentary complex on Tuesday (April 21).
