Prabowo said he has signed Presidential Regulation No. 25 of 2026 to ratify the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 188, aimed at ensuring the protection and welfare of fishers.
“For the first time in the history of the Republic of Indonesia, fishermen are being cared for, all of them. With 6 million fishermen, our work to improve their welfare will also benefit their wives and children, totaling 20 million of the Indonesian population,” the president said.
The convention includes provisions guaranteeing workers in the fisheries sector the right to decent accommodation on board vessels with adequate provisions, employment under written contracts, and access to social protection.
The president also announced that he has signed Presidential Regulation No. 27 of 2026 to protect workers in the online ride-hailing sector. The regulation ensures that drivers receive health insurance and retain at least 92 percent of their earnings.
Prabowo further reiterated the government’s commitment to accelerate the construction of one million affordable housing units this year, enabling workers to purchase homes within their current income levels.
“You said that 30 percent of your income is spent on rent. We will ensure that you can own a home for the same amount. The 30 percent you currently use for rent will instead go toward paying installments for your dream home,” he said.
He added that instructions have been issued to the ministers of manpower and law to work with the House of Representatives to expedite the passage of the Manpower Bill into law this year.
The move aligns with calls from labor unions for stronger protections and workers’ rights through the enactment of the bill.
“If possible, the bill must be completed this year in the interest of workers,” Prabowo said.
