In a statement confirmed from here on Tuesday, Minister Hidayat praised the Green Policing initiative introduced by the Riau Regional Police, in which police officers take part in environmental conservation by considering ecological justice and adaptive approaches to socio-ecological issues.
“Beyond the call of duty. This means the tasks carried out go beyond what is expected, not merely enforcement. We know that the police are often associated with enforcement. However, this activity is preventive in nature in improving and preserving the environment,” Hidayat said.
According to him, the approach aligns with the ministry's policy direction, which currently places preventive measures and behavioral change as key elements in addressing environmental issues.
“The ministry's approach is to conduct massive campaigns from the lowest to the highest levels, as if environmental protection becomes our shared ideology. As we only have one world, we must protect it. All segments of society, wherever they are, certainly want to safeguard this one world,” he said.
The Ministry of Environment views green policing as a form of collaborative leadership capable of integrating the role of law enforcement officers with community participation in protecting the environment.
He also assessed that the program is effective in encouraging collective awareness and strengthening oversight of practices that have the potential to harm the environment.
He encouraged the green policing model in Riau to be replicated in other regions as part of a national effort to strengthen ecological resilience and ensure that environmental management is carried out more effectively, measurably, and sustainably.
