“I strongly condemn the alleged abuse of female students in Pati. Such actions are intolerable. The legal process will be carried out firmly, transparently, and justly,” Gibran said in a statement received here on Tuesday.
He also ensured that the government under President Prabowo Subianto has made child protection a priority.
One key focus, he said, is ensuring that schools and Islamic boarding schools are safe and secure environments for children.
Regarding the case in Pati, VP Gibran said he had instructed that psychological assistance and trauma recovery support be provided intensively to the victims.
“Going forward, supervision and protection of students will be strengthened to prevent similar incidents from recurring,” he said.
Earlier, authorities reported alleged sexual abuse involving at least 50 female students at the Ndholo Kusumo Islamic boarding school in Tlogosari Village, Pati District.
Most of the victims are junior high school students in grades VII to IX. Some are orphans or come from low-income families who depend on free education at the boarding school.
Pati Police have named the boarding school caretaker, identified by the initials AS, as a suspect. Despite being named a suspect, AS has not yet been detained.
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has urged law enforcement authorities to immediately arrest the suspect.
“Police must act firmly and promptly, arrest the perpetrator, and disclose the facts of the alleged criminal violations transparently to the public,” KPAI Chairman Aris Adi Leksono said when contacted on Tuesday.
