Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Nutrition Agency (BGN) stated that kitchens for the Nutritious Free Food (MBG) program are capable of contributing up to six million liters of used cooking oil for green energy each month.

BGN Chief Dadan Hindayana stated that, on average, each MBG kitchen—officially known as a Nutritional Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG)—uses about 800 liters of cooking oil per month and that around 70 percent of this amount, or approximately 500 to 590 liters, becomes used cooking oil.

"If we multiply the projected 500 liters with the existing kitchens, we can pool at least 6 million liters of used cooking oil per month," Hindayana said in his written remarks on Friday.

The number of SPPGs in Java alone currently stands at 17,200 units, he added.

The BGN head said that SPPGs have been instructed not to reuse cooking oil excessively for health and food quality reasons. "It can be used a maximum of three frying cycles before we set it aside as used cooking oil," he stated.

Hindayana said that millions of liters of the used cooking oil provided by SPPGs will provide an important step for circular economy-based green energy development.

It also means that MBG kitchens are contributing to building national energy resilience, he added.

"This can be our first step in our cooperation in making the used cooking oil, which we see as waste earlier, valuable for energy," Hindayana said.

For the purpose, the National Nutrition Agency on Thursday (May 7) inked a memorandum of understanding with state oil company Pertamina to promote the use of used cooking oil for the development of alternative and low-carbon energy systems in Indonesia.

Besides contributing used cooking oil for green energy, BGN also encouraged MBG kitchens to start using alternative energy in their operations, including by using compressed natural gas (CNG), he remarked.
