"The potential is always there, and we are unlocking all the potential. It is just a matter of economics," Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Laksana Tri Handoko stated in Jakarta, Thursday.
Handoko pointed out that the mission to process used cooking oil waste into aircraft fuel depends on the price of aviation fuel in the market.
According to the agency head, if the price of aviation fuel is high, then used cooking oil waste could become a promising commodity.
"However, the important aspect is that we have to master all the technology from all the alternatives, so that whatever happens, we are ready," Handoko explained.

On Wednesday (May 29), Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan chaired a meeting on the national road map and action plan for the development of a sustainable aviation fuel industry.
The minister drew attention to the fact that as much as 95 percent of used cooking oil from a potential supply of one million liters annually is exported to several countries. In fact, used cooking oil waste can be reprocessed into an alternative energy source.
Pandjaitan targets that after the issuance of the presidential regulation, the government will launch a legal basis for the production and use of sustainable aviation fuel by September 2024.
