As cited from a Presidential Secretariat statement on Saturday, Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono noted that the president joined Southeast Asian leaders in talks centered on developments in Myanmar following its recent elections.
“Indonesia holds to its position that if the elections were to proceed, they should be held in an inclusive manner and lead to solutions to ongoing problems there, ultimately bringing peace and fostering a better situation,” he stated.
Sugiono added that the summit held in Cebu in the Philippines drew attention to the Five Point Consensus (5PC) designed as the primary guideline for assisting Myanmar in addressing its crises.
ASEAN leaders also appreciated the newly elected government in Myanmar for taking concrete initial steps toward restoring peace, according to the minister.
“Following the elections were several positive gestures by the new government deserving appreciation, particularly the release of around six thousand political detainees, according to Myanmar reports,” he said.
The minister also pointed to the decision to transfer former leader Aung San Suu Kyi from prison to house arrest as a positive development.
According to him those developments reflected the efforts of Myanmar to follow the regional consensus and encouraged fellow nations to continue supporting the country in overcoming its crises.
“In short, everyone is on the same page that ASEAN must act as one family and that member countries should continue paying attention to and engaging Myanmar to help it find its own way toward a better situation,” Sugiono affirmed.
Shifting to the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia he said President Prabowo had called for peaceful resolutions while underscoring the importance of both countries resorting to dialogue and negotiations.
He added that the Indonesian president encouraged both sides to explore areas of cooperation that could benefit people while continuing diplomatic talks to tackle border issues.
Sugiono highlighted that Indonesia has consistently promoted peaceful resolutions to disputes and challenges across Southeast Asia to maintain regional stability.
