Penajam Paser Utara (ANTARA) - The Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN) pledged strict law enforcement against forest destruction within the delineation area of Indonesia’s new capital, covering parts of North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara Districts in East Kalimantan.

“We will firmly enforce the law against activities that harm the environment,” said Agung Dodit Muliawan, an official of the OIKN in Sepaku on Sunday, reaffirming OIKN’s commitment to tackling illegal activities in the IKN delineation area.

Muliawan, who is also the chairperson of the Task Force for Combating Illegal Activities in the IKN region, stated that his team is also carrying out land restoration and educating the community about preserving forest areas in the IKN.

He said that the task force is taking firm action to stop all forms of illegal activity in the IKN and has erected prohibition signs to prevent any party from conducting mining activities in protected forest areas.

The Bukit Soeharto People's Forest Park (Tahura), he said, is a conservation forest area where mining activities of any kind are legally prohibited.

“The area is protected from all forms of encroachment and illegal mining activities, with law enforcement continuing without exception,” he stated.

The IKN Authority is also actively engaging with local communities and opening dialogue to find solutions regarding activities that predate the establishment of the IKN.

Furthermore, patrols have been intensified, law enforcement strengthened, and legal action pursued against illegal activities, while local communities are encouraged to assist monitoring efforts through the IKN Authority’s official reporting channels.

The public has been urged to report any suspected violations or illegal activities in the Tahura area or other forest areas within the IKN through the official IKN Authority complaint hotline at +62 811 5999 767.

Muliawan stated that a cross-ministerial and inter-agency task force was formed in 2023 to monitor, investigate, and enforce the law against various illegal activities in the IKN area.

The task force’s actions have included a P21 illegal coal transport case, the closure of an illegal mine in Bukit Tengkorak, investigations into illegal mining near Samboja Hospital by the East Kalimantan Regional Police, and cases involving illegal coal mining and sales handled by the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency.

The task force also took action against the transportation of illegal coal using seven trucks and illegal coal shipments to a jetty, with the cases handed over to the relevant law enforcement authorities.
