"Regarding the incident in East Bekasi, we are awaiting the results of the National Transportation Safety Committee's investigation," Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said during a Working Meeting of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta on Thursday.
He considered that discussions regarding the East Bekasi incident should not focus solely on one incident, but should serve as an opportunity to examine railway safety issues more comprehensively.
Railway safety encompasses various aspects, from facilities and infrastructure, operations, human resources, governance, procedural discipline, supervision, and spatial planning around railway lines.
The government stresses that safety remains the top priority, while avoiding premature conclusions or speculation before the official investigation is fully completed and all facts, data, and technical findings are thoroughly examined.
According to Purwagandhi, results from the KNKT investigation will serve as the basis for the government in determining corrective measures and ensuring that all safety recommendations are implemented diligently by relevant parties.
While still awaiting the results of the investigation, the government has taken various steps since the initial incident, including victim care, service restoration, initial technical inspections, and securing the scene.
Furthermore, the government believes railway safety must be continuously strengthened through comprehensive evaluations of operations, infrastructure, facilities, signaling systems, emergency procedures, human resources, risk management, and coordination across sectors, including level crossing monitoring.
The minister also expressed his condolences, concern, and deep empathy for the victims and their families affected by the accident, which resulted in the loss of life.
Furthermore, he lauded all parties involved in the emergency response process, including Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency), the police, the Indonesian military (TNI), medical personnel, and other elements who assisted in the evacuation of victims.
On Monday (April 27), a train collision between the Cikarang Commuter Line and the Argo Bromo Anggrek resulted in 16 deaths and 91 injuries at Bekasi Timur Station.
