Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government continues to oversee preparations for the Giant Sea Wall project along Java's northern coast, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said.

"I have reported to the President that we are continuing to oversee this project in 2026, and hopefully implementation will be more advanced in 2027," said Yudhoyono, popularly known as AHY, in a statement on Friday.

He said the project is intended to protect the northern coast of Java from land subsidence and rising sea levels while safeguarding the economy and livelihoods of coastal communities.

According to AHY, the government is refining the project roadmap and strengthening cross-regional coordination to accelerate implementation.

The 575-kilometer sea wall is designed to protect coastal areas, support food security, safeguard industrial zones, and protect millions of residents living along Java's northern coast.

The government plans to divide the northern Java coastline into 15 segments for phased construction aimed at reducing coastal risks and land subsidence.

The implementation timeline is still being finalized because the project must consider technical, environmental, and social aspects.

The Java Northern Coast Management Authority Agency (BOPPJ) said construction would be carried out gradually while taking into account existing economic activities and local livelihoods along the coast.

BOPPJ added that the project would involve coordination with regional governments at district, municipal, and provincial levels.

The project is expected to protect not only factories and offices but also coastal communities, fishermen, and local ecosystems.

AHY emphasized the need to accelerate development of the Giant Sea Wall project, which has become one of the government’s national strategic priorities.
