At the UN Security Council High-Level Open Debate in New York on Tuesday (May 26), Sugiono explained that the current global challenges persist not because the UN Charter has lost its relevance, but because international principles are too often applied selectively.
"Indonesia views the situation in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, as a clear reflection of the international community's failure to uphold these principles fairly and consistently," he was quoted as saying in a statement released by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Wednesday.
Therefore, Indonesia reiterates that the two-state solution—based on international law and relevant UN resolutions—is the only way to achieve a just and sustainable peace for Palestine, he added.
Sugiono also condemned the increasing attacks on UN peacekeepers as an attack on the principles of multilateralism. This incident, he said, demonstrates the growing urgency of protecting UN peacekeepers.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of respecting international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in ensuring that international strategic shipping lanes do not become arenas of confrontation.
He also underscored the increasing global security threats, including the impact of the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous weapons on the nature of modern conflict.
In the face of current global geopolitical developments, Indonesia is renewing its push for reform of the UN Security Council to make it more representative, transparent, accountable and capable of reflecting the voices of developing countries.
"The world does not need a new hierarchy, but rather a renewed commitment to returning to the principles of the UN Charter and strengthening multilateralism that serves all countries equally,” Sugiono stated.
In addition to participating in the UN Security Council agenda, Minister Sugiono also held bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of China and Argentina to discuss bilateral strategic issues and current developments.
He also held discussions with the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Bahrain, Kyrgyzstan and Cuba.
