According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake struck 10.47 degrees southern latitude and 113.33 degrees eastern longitude in a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake, not strong enough to trigger a tsunami, was located 258 kilometers southwest of Jember district.
Secretary of the Jember disaster mitigation unit Edy Budi Susilo said his side had already been informed on the quake.
"People along the coast felt only a slight tremble and therefore far from becoming panic," he said.
He added that the Jember unit was still making an inspection of the situation in a number of sub-districts along the coast.
"I have asked the sub-district chief whose area covers the coast to make an inspection and collect data on the quake," he said.
From the quake`s location some 258 kilometers southwest of Jember, he said, the residents who felt the quake were apparently in Puger sub-districts of Gumukmas, Kencong, and Jombang.
"The result of the survey shows that there has been no reports on fatalities in the sub-district," he said.
The BMKG further disclosed that the quake was located some 258 kilometers southwest of Jember regency, 260 kilometers southeast of Lumajang regency , 276 km southwest of Banyuwangi regency, 280 km southwest of Nusa Dua (Bali), and 865 km southeast of Jakarta.
