"The government is determined to settle the cases that emerged during the detention period and trials of Gayus Tambunan,"Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered the police and the attorney general`s office to speed up the settlement of the cases involving tax fraud defendant Gayus Tambunan.
"The government is determined to settle the cases that emerged during the detention period and trials of Gayus Tambunan," the President said after a limited cabinet meeting on political, security and legal affairs here on Monday afternoon.
He said there were three targets in this regard, namely enforcing the rule of law and punishing those guilty and putting in order the organization, positions and ranks in a number of state institutions where irregularities and even crimes often happen.
"The third target is to identify the weak points and loopholes in the laws that can be used to commit violations and cover or correct them to prevent the recurrence of irregularities and crimes in the future," he said.
President Yudhoyono also ordered an improvement of synergy among law enforcers involving the Financial Transactions Analysis and Reporting Center (PPATK) and the task force for eradication of judicial mafia syndicates.
"The KPK (Corruption Eradication Commission) needs to be involved more and pushed to conduct probes into cases the police have not been able to solve," he said.
President Yudhoyono also called for an audit on the performance and financial conditions of law enforcers linked to Gayus`s cases including those in the police force, the prosecutor`s office and the Directorate General of Taxation.
"Law enforcement must be carried out fairly and indiscriminately on 149 companies said to have possibly been involved in tax fraud cases and if during the probe strong evidence is found to show their involvement in the cases further investigation must be carried out," he said.
He said he personally supported the application of a reverse system to find those guilty in the Gayus`s cases for effective enforcement of the law.
"Secure and recover the funds as well as state assets and also confiscate those allegedly coming from Gayus`s case of corruption," he said.
With regard to reform in state institutions President Yudhoyono said "give administrative and disciplinary as well as legal sanctions to all officials declared guilty and having carried out irregularities including transferring to other posts or firing them within the next week," he said.
He said on the organizations or institutions whose officials had conducted irregularities order must be carried out so that the officials that would replace them would not make the same mistakes or irregularities in the future.
"We will conduct an inspection and improvement on the working system and regulations that have weak points so that irregularities could be prevented in the future," he said.
President Yudhoyono also called on all officials concerned to give him reports on the development of the settlement of the Gayus`s cases every two weeks including on officials concerned with regard to what they have done, is doing and will do to settle the cases periodically to the people.
"I have assigned the vice president to lead the supervision, evaluation and monitoring helped by the task force for eradication of judicial mafia syndicates," he said.
The meeting for two hours was attended by the three coordinating ministers, the police chief, the commander of the defense forces, the attorney general, the minister of justice and human rights, the minister/state secretary, the cabinet secretary, the minister of administrative reform, the finance minister and head of the task force of the eradication of judicial mafia syndicate.(*)
