Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The House of Representatives (DPR)`s Commission VIII on religious and social affairs will on Wednesday evening summon the minister of religious affairs and the police chief over the Pandeglang and Temanggung riots.

"Religious Minister Suryadharma Ali and Police Chief Timor Pradopo have confirmed their readiness to attend the meeting with Commission VIII," Commission VIII chairman Abdul Kadir Karding said here on Wednesday.

He said that Commission VIII had initially set the meeting to ask for explanations on the incident relating to the religious life in Pandeglang, Banten.

But because of another incident relating to religion in Temanggung, Central Java, Commission VIII will ask explanations on the two separate clashes.

The incident in Cikeusik subdistrict, Pandeglang, took place on Sunday after local residents attacked a house believed to be a place for meetings among the Ahmadiyah Islamic sect followers.

During the incident, three people who were followers of the Ahmadiyah sect were killed.

In the meantime, the rioting in Temanggung happened when the judge sentenced to five years a defendant in a religious blasphemy case. The residents were dissatisfied with the sentencing which they considered too lenient.

There churches were destroyed by angry mobs.(*)
