Cairo (ANTARA News/Reuters) - Egypt`s foreign ministry on Tuesday told its embassies in the Arab world and Western countries to seek a freeze on the assets of former President Hosni Mubarak and his family, the ministry said.

The instructions follow a request from Egypt`s public prosecutor.

"The foreign ministry has referred the requests received from the Egyptian public prosecutor...to embassies in the European Union, in western states and Arab countries," the ministry said.

Judicial authorities in the relevant countries would be contacted to proceed with the freezing of the assets of Mubarak, his wife, two sons and their wives.

Media reports have suggested the former president`s wealth may total billions of dollars and some leaders of the protests that ousted Mubarak accuse him of squandering the wealth of the Arab world`s most populous nation. (*)
