Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Timor Leste here on Tuesday signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in education and diplomats` training, technical cooperation in the tourism and trade sectors as well as development of infrastructure.

Other sectors included in the MoU were technical cooperation in decentralization and state management, transportation and marine and fisheries.

The signing ceremony took place at the presidential palace in Central Jakarta and was witnessed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao.

Before witnessing the signing of the MoU, the two leaders had met to discuss development of bilateral relation between Indonesia and Timor Leste.

Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao is scheduled to stay in Indonesia until March 25.

Several Indonesian senior officials also attending the Tuesday meeting were Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Marine and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa, Transportation Minister Freddy Numberi, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, National Education Minister Muhammad Nuh, State Secretary Sudi Silalahi, Cabinet Secretary Dipo Alam and National Military Chief Admiral Agus Suhartono.

On the Timor Leste side there were Foreign Affairs Minister Zacarias da Costa, Economic and Development Minister Joao Goncalves, Infrastructure Minister Pedro Lay da Silva, Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Mariano Assanami Sabino, Timor Leste`s f Military Chief Major General Taur Matan Ruak, Tourism, Trade and Industry Minister Gil Alves, and Timor Leste`s Ambassador to Indonesia Manuel Serrano.

Timor Leste, formerly known as East Timor, declared its independence on May 20, 2002, following a United Nations sponsored referendum in 1999 in which the people of Timor Leste voted in favor of independence instead of integration with Indonesia.
