Mamuju, West Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - A whirlwind damaged hundreds of houses and injured two residents in Kalukku sub district, Mamuju District, West Sulawesi Province, in the wee hour of Thursday.

Kalukku District Head Rambli Badau confirmed confirmed here the whirlwind that damaged at least over 100 houses in the eastern coastal area of the sub district.

"Last night, our people were hit by a whirlwind while they were soundly asleep," he said.

He could not give the exact number of damaged houses, but he was sure it could be more than 100 houses.

Kayu Mate, Kalukku Barat was the worst-hit village with more than 100 houses damaged at the village alone, he said.

The whirlwind also struck Salupompong, Beru-Beru, Bakengkeng, n Kabuloang and Babalabuang villages, he said.

The strong wind also uprooted a number of electric poles causing power blackouts in some areas. A search and rescue team has been sent to the affected areas.
