Nairobi (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday urged Cote d`Ivoire`s Laurent Gbagbo to step down.

"I renew my call on Mr Gbagbo to step down to avoid further violence and transfer power immediately to the legitimate winner of the election President (Alassane) Ouattara," Ban told journalists here.

The United States on Friday called on Cote d`Ivoire`s Laurent Gbagbo to "step down immediately " to end the ongoing violence.

"We are concerned about the ongoing violence and we call on Mr. Gbabgo to step down immediately," U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters at the department. Full story

AU calls on Cote d`Ivoire`s Gbagbo to immediately hand over power to Outtara

The African Union (AU) on Friday called on Laurent Gbagbo of Cote d`Ivoire to immediately hand over power to president-elect of Alassane Outtara to end the crisis peacefully in that country.

The AU says it is following the current situation in Cote d` Ivoire, marked by military operations. In a statement it sent to Xinhua, AU said Jean Ping, AUC Chairperson regretted that rejection by Gbagbo of peaceful proposals made by the AU and the international community, has not made possible to speedily complete the implementation of peaceful solution to the crisis in that country.
