Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A railway linking Soekarno-Hatta international airport with downtown Jakarta is to be constructed starting later this year and be completed in 2012, a minister said.

State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Mustafa Abubakar told the press here on Friday that the government had decided to assign his ministry to study the possibility of letting certain state-owned enterprises finance the airport railway project.

Abubakar said some state-owned companies had both the financial and technical capabilities required for carrying out the project. State railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia would be involved in the construction of the railway.

The project, he said, would consist of three segments, namely the airport-Cengkareng, the Manggarai-Cengkareng and the Outer Ring Track Pluit-Cengkareng sections. The project would include construction of flyovers and underpasses at points where the tracks meet city streets.

SOEs Ministry officials and the Jakarta Special Province officials had a meeting on the project on Friday, said Abubakar. He however did not disclose about the investment to be allocated by the government on the project.

"The government gives one year for the completion of the project. If all the aspects are finalized this year, then the construction of the project could be completed in 2012," said Minister Abubakar of the rail-link that will connect the 28-km distance between the airport and the city.(*)
