Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Tuesday questioned the use of the Indonesian phrase "hak kekayaan intelektual" for the English words "intellectual property rights."

The president questioned the phrase in his opening address at the National Convention on Intellectual Property Rights (HKI) at the State Palace.

According to the head of state, the word "property" in the phrase "intellectual property rights" should not be translated into the Indonesian language as "kekayaan" or riches.

He said the right word in Bahasa for the word "property" was "kepemilikan" or "possession" so that the phrase "intellectual property rights" should be translated as "hak kepemilikan intelektual" instead of "hak kekayaan intelektual."

The president said that in conceptual terms the word "kepemilikan" was more appropriate to prevent somebody`s intellectual possession from being stolen by somebody else.

But the president left it to the linguists and lawyers to decide which term - Hak Kekayaan Intelektual or Hak Kepemilikan Intelektual - was more correct for Intellectual Property Rights.

"Anyway, I wholly leave it to the linguists and lawyers," President Yudhoyono said when opening the National Convention on Intellectual Property Rights.

The convention was organized by the ministry of law and human rights in observance of World Intellectual Property Day which falls on April 26.

The event was also attended by among others Chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Taufik Kiemas, Supreme Court (MA) Chief Harifin A Tumpa, Attorney General Basrief Arief and a number of cabinet ministers.

April 26th is observed annually as World Intellectual Property Organization Day (WIPO Day).

This year the theme is: "Designing for Future" and coincides wit the half century of Indonesia`s first regulation on intellectual property rights, namely Law No. 21/1961 on Trade Brand.

During the event, the justice and human rights minister presented awards to several figures and institutions considered having significant contribution in promoting and protecting intellectual property rights in Indonesia. (*)
