"The system that may have been prolonged by the bureaucracy, we will shorten it up."Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Law and Human Rights Ministry has set itself the target of handling 5,000 intellectual property right (IPR) applications in 2011 by taking drastic steps including cutting bureaucratic requirements.
"There are so many applications, up to 5,000, which has become our backlog ," said Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar to newsmen after attending the opening of a national convention on intellectual property rights here Tuesday.
Akbar said his ministry would in 2011 implement a special program to cut bureaucratic procedures in an effort to tackle its application backlog.
"We all work overtime, all our employees will work overtime. The system that may have been prolonged by the bureaucracy, we will shorten it up," the minister said, adding that the long waiting time may have also been caused by incomplete documents on the part of the applicants.
In addition, he said, his ministry must work very carefully so that there will be no double registration approvals for an application.
For the registration of copy rights, which does not require a close inspection of its substantive aspects, Akbar promised the approval process can be done more quickly.
To encourage registrations of IPR, Akbar said his ministry will open a free-of-charge registration session for applicants from universities, schools and small scale businesses.
"So, there`ll be an opportunity for free-of-charge registration provided by the state," the minister said.
