"Although Bank Mega said the withdrawal was done according to the procedures and system BI will still conduct an examination."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Bank Indonesia will examine Bank Mega in connection with the theft of PT Elnusa funds in the bank by some of the company`s staff, BI Deputy Governor Halim Alamsyah said.

"With regard to the bank surely we will examine it to see where the weakness lies. The bank supervision department would assure that the case would not happen in the future," he said here on Tuesday.

He made the statement after Bank Mega claimed it was not wrong with regard to the loss of PT Elnusa`s funds in the time deposits worth Rp111 billion because the funds were withdrawn by the company`s own finance director.

"Although Bank Mega said the withdrawal was done according to the procedures and system BI will still conduct an examination," he said.

Regarding the theft case itself, Halim said it had been dealt with by the police and declared as a banking crime.

Earlier, a Jakarta Police Command member disclosed that the theft of PT Elnusa`s funds allegedly involved officials from the company which is a subsidiary of PT Pertamina, Bank Mega and a broker.

Police have detained as suspects PT Elnusa`s finance director SN alias Santun Nainggolan, chief of Bank Mega`s Jababeka branch Itman Harry Basuki, PT Discovery`s director known by his initials as ICL, a commissioner of PT HAR known by his initials as HG, the alleged mastermind RL and PT HAR staff member TZS.

State Enterprises Minister Mustafa Abubakar meanwhile said PT Elnusa would remain stable despite the loss of Rp111 billion in time deposits in the Bank Mega branch in Jababeka, Cikarang.

"What we are hoping is it will not cause a loss for Elnusa but this has happened because of a banking factor," he said after attending the opening of a national convention on intellectual property rights at the presidential palace here on Tuesday.

He said the case happened because of a problem at Bank Mega, not at PT Elnusa.

He said he had asked PT Pertamina to settle the case judicially and thoroughly to make it clear, adding anyone found guilty must be given a harsh sanction.
