Balikpapan, East Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - With a border line of 1,038 km with neighboring Malaysia, East Kalimantan province still relies on aircraft and airstrips for its transportation system, an regional government official said.

"We still rely on air transportation services because some areas are not yet linked with road infrastructure and river transportation," Head of East Kalimantan Transportation services Zairin Zain said here on Wednesday.

Zairin was in Balikpapan to attend a technical working meeting on pioneer streets organized by the directorate general of land transportation.

A number of sub-districts which share borders with Malaysia in East Kalimantan have to use air transportation both for passengers and cargoes.

These sub-districts included Long Ampung in Malinau district and Krayan in Nunukan districts, he said.
