Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia needs a concerted disaster mitigation effort to anticipate the recurrence of various major natural disasters such as the ones that had happened in the past, a special presidential staff said.

Special Presidential Staff for Natural Disaster Affairs Andi Arief said here on Sunday that one of the main concepts in the earth science to understand the future threat of disasters was to learn and understand the nature of disasters themselves, particularly those which had taken place in the past.

"Natural disasters are products of the cycle of nature such as the cycle of earthquake, mount eruption, movement of faults, foods and other natural catastrophe," he said.

In the face of these problems, the government had done its best in preparing teams and mitigation efforts, including concrete steps to be taken in the face of various threats of disasters in the country.

The team among other things has the task to observe continuously the threat of potential earthquake of magnitude 8.9 Richter scale in Siberut, seismic gap in southern Java and Sunda Strait, he said.

"The geological conditions of the Sunda Strait sea bed are unstable and have the potentials to create slides disaster when an earthquake happens," he said.(*)
