Cilacap, Central Java (ANTARA News) - A flood inundated hundreds of houses at Tarisi village in Cilacap district, Central Java, on Sunday following heavy rains overnight.

"Flood water began to inundate the village in the morning. We fear the flood will spread to other areas as rain continued to fall in the afternoon," Tarisi village head Tohirman said.

The flood affected three hamlets of Sidodadi, Rangkasan, and Cikaronjo with the water level reaching 10 to 65 cm, he said.

He said his side was still counting the number of flooded houses. "At least 150 houses in two hamlets have been flooded, not to mention the number of flooded houses in other hamlet. The number may increase as rains have become increasingly heavier," he said.

The flood also inundated hectares of rice fields.

The flood was caused not only by rains on Saturday night but also by water from the hill north of the village.

The water level at Citanduy river which is not far from the village also began to increase and that the flow of flood water to the river was disrupted.

The flood also inundated the provincial road linking Sidareja to Cukangleleus in Central Java`s southern part. By 06.00 p.m. on Sunday the flood water began to subside.

There was no immediate report of material losses caused by the flood.

Head of the Cilacap District Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD) Wasi Ariyadi said the board was coordinating with the village administration in overcoming the impact of the flood.
