Pakistan pm announces probe into bin Laden raid

Islamabad (ANTARA News/AFP - Pakistan`s prime minister Tuesday ordered an independent commission to investigate the Abbottabad operation in which elite US forces killed Osama bin Laden on May 2, the premier`s media office said.

"Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has constituted a commission to investigate the Abbotabad incident," a statement said, referring to the garrison town north of Islamabad where the Al-Qaeda leader had been hiding.

A five member commission will be headed by Justice Javed Iqbal, a senior judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, it added.

Pakistan`s parliament earlier this month urged the government to appoint an independent group to probe the raid that killed bin Laden, aimed at ensuring that such an incident in not repeated.

Lawmakers also threatened to withdraw logistical cooperation for US troops based in Afghanistan and condemned CIA-operated drone strikes in the wake of the helicopter-borne assault by US Navy SEALs that led to bin Laden`s death. (*)
