Washington (ANTARA News/AFP) - A tour bus filled almost to capacity flipped over and crashed on a busy highway south of the US capital, killing four people and injuring many passengers, state police said Tuesday.

The Sky Express bus was carrying 58 passengers and the driver when it crashed at 0455 local time (0855 GMT) on heavily traveled Interstate-95 in Caroline county near the Virginia state capital, Richmond, Virginia state police said.

"The cause of the crash is being attributed to driver fatigue," the statement added, noting that the highway`s northbound lane was closed and an investigation was under way.

The injured were being treated in hospitals in three cities and some of the injuries were "life threatening," the statement said.

The bus left North Carolina late Monday en route for New York city, it added.

The driver, who has not been charged, was the only person on the bus who was not treated in a local hospital, state police spokesman Thomas Molnar told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Eight people were treated at Mary Washington Hospital, and their condition ranged from good to critical, said hospital spokeswoman Kathleen Allenbaugh. (*)
