Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA News) - Jip Jampasuk (28), a Thai woman, was sentenced to 10 years in jail by the Denpasar District Court on Wednesday for smuggling narcotic drugs into the island.

Chief Judge Parulian Saragih said "she was sentenced to 10 years minus time in detention and fined Rp2 billion or six months more in jail if she cannot pay the fine."

He said the defendant had been convincingly proven to be guilty of violating the law on production, import, export or distribution of category I non-plant narcotics weighing more than five grams.

The panel of judges in its verdict said the sentence was given based on the facts revealed during the trial sessions and testimonies from witnesses.

The sentence was lighter than the 12 years and Rp2 billion fine demanded by public prosecutors M Darwis and Sulasmi.

Jip Jampasuk was caught by customs officers at Bali`s Ngurah Rai Airport on January 9 at around 4pm upon arrival aboard aircraft flight number TG 431.

She was caught after an X-Ray check. Although officials did not find illegal stuff in her travel bag they decided to search her body due to her suspicious behavior.

Customs officers sent her to a nearby hospital for a CT-Scan check after noticing her stomach was very hard when pressed during a body search.

It was later discovered that she kept in her stomach several methampthetamine capsules of various sizes that contained 11, 12, 29, 83 to 60 grams of methamphetamine.

During further questioning it was discovered the Thai woman had obtained the drug from a Nigerian man named Steven in Thailand.(*)
