Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The government plans to increase the number of lawyers it can use any time to defend Indonesian migrant workers (TKIs) who meet problems abroad, Manpower Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said.

"The government always strives to enhance its capability to defend migrant workers who run into problems abroad. Therefore, we will enlarge our teams of lawyers and experts for the legal defense of migrant workers," the minister told the press here on Tuesday.

According to him the efforts would be made seriously and carried out continuously in a bid to help migrant workers.

In addition, the government will also make a plea to resolve the migrant workers problem who face criminal charges by means of diplomacy, including seduction and negotiation with the victim family or to pay compensation (diyat) to the migrant workers employers, the minister said.

"We will continue striving to conduct the steps of diplomacy. The steps of diplomacy we`ve done many times namely by making visits to Saudi Arabia along with the officials of Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and the related agencies," Muhaimin said, adding that hundreds of problematic workers have been freed.

"The Saudi government is also expected to have the same commitment (to settle the workers` problem)," the minister noted.

In the meantime, the Saudi government, according to Muhaimin, has agreed to accelerate discussions on MoU (dealing with the workers` problem) by the end of June 2011.
