Sao Paulo (ANTARA News/AFP) - Seventy-eight inmates broke out of a prison in southern Brazil, and authorities on Monday said they had recaptured 21 of them.

The mass escape on Sunday jolted the prison in the beach resort city and university town of Florianapolis, in Santa Catarina state, a state government spokseman said.

Six prisoners broke out early Sunday followed by a throng of another 72 later in the day, authorities said. So far, 21 have been recaptured, they said.

There have been at least five more breakouts at the same facility so far this year, authorities added.
