Gorontalo (ANTARA News) - A flood triggered by incessant rains inundated thousands of houses in Gorontalo province on Wednesday.

The flood affected the four sub districts of Botumoito, Dulupi, Pagguyaman, and Tilamuta in Boalemo district, with the water level in the worst-hit area reaching up to 2 meters.

The flood occurred after Hungayonaa river overflowed due to the high rainfalls since early June 2011, deputy Boalemo district head Laode Haimudin said.

He said deforestation in the upper reach of the river was also to blame for the flood.

"The flood this time was the biggest in the past tens of years," he said.

At least one child was killed in the flood after being carried away by water current, he said.

The flood also cut off Trans Sulawesi Highway for six hours and inundated hundreds of hectares of paddy field.
