Morowali, C Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Vice President Boediono attended the commemoration of the 81st anniversary of Alkhairaat Islamic boarding school here Saturday.

The vice president and his spouse, Mrs. Herawati Boediono, arrived at the venue at 12.35 am local time and were greeted by Al Khairaat Chairman Said Segal Al Jufri and Chairman of the Al Khairaat Executive Board Ali Bin Muhammad Al Jufri.

Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola and Morowali District Head Anward Hafid also greeted the vice president and his entourage.

The vice president was accompanied by among others Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad.

Boediono said he was convinced that Alkhairaat was established to develop the people in eastern Indonesia.

On the occasion, he planted a trembesi tree (Samanea Samano or rain tree in the front yard of the Islamic boarding school.

In April last year, Vice President Boediono paid homage to the grave of Alkhairaat`s founder Habib Syekh Idrus Salim Aljufri in Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi Province.

Al Khairaat education institution was established by Idrus Salim Al Jufri at Donggala, Palu.

Idrus Salim Al Jufri was a prominent ulema born in Yaman on March 18, 1891.

Alkhairaat is the biggest Islamic education institution in eastern Indonesia. The Alkhairrat Islamic boarding school was first established in 1930.

Currently, Alkhairaat has more than 1,600 schools, from kindergarten schools until universities in 12 provinces in Indonesia.

Among the important agenda during the anniversary activities is a gathering of teachers from 1,700 Alkhairaat madrasah (Islamic schools) located throughout Indonesia.

Minister Fadel, National Education Minister Mohammad Nuh and Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali will speak before the teachers. The four ministers will speak in the anniversary activities organized from July 1 to 3, 2011.
