Bandarlampung, Lampung (ANTARA News) - Khofifah Indar Parawansa was re-elected chief of the Muslim women organization of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) at the organization`s 16th congress here on Saturday night.

Khofifah was by acclamation re-elected to the post for the third time until 2016 at a plenary meeting led by the chief of West Java`s chapter of the organization, Ella M Giri Komala.

She was appointed to the post without election.

After reading out the election rules, Ella asked for approval from the congress to re-elect the former women`s empowerment minister for the post and participants of the congress later approved her re-election by acclamation based on a joint statement by chiefs of the organization`s provincial and district branches supporting her bid for a third term of office.

Fifty-one of the organization`s 52 branches all over the country and one special branch in Saudi Arabia expressed support for Khofifah`s re-election.

Only the Yogyakarta chapter did not firmly support Khofifah`s re-election but said it would accept whoever was elected to the post.

Khofifah had earlier been under a threat of not being re-elected after she had chaired the organization for two terms.

But the organization`s commission in charge of discussing articles of association decided to scrap a clause restricting the term of office of the organization`s chief. (*)
