Islamabad (ANTARA News/AFP) - The Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will begin in Pakistan on Tuesday, it was officially announced.

"The crescent moon has been sighted in several cities and towns" across the country, including the capital Islamabad and the port city of Karachi late Monday, said Muneeb-ur Rehman, chairman of the state moon sighting committee.

"The holy month of Ramadan will begin on Tuesday," he said in a televised broadcast.

During the month devout Muslims must abstain from food, drink and sex from dawn until sunset, when they break the fast with the meal known as Iftar.

Ramadan in Pakistan, the world`s second most populous Muslim country, starts one day after Saudi Arabia, home to Islam`s holiest shrines Mecca and Medina, because local authorities did not confirm sighting the new moon on Sunday. (*)
