The quake was centered 140 km southwest of Krui or 325 km southwest of Jakarta at a depth of 10 km, the agency said.
It said the quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage caused by Tuesday`s quake.
A shallow-undersea quake with a magnitude of 6.3 also jolted West Lampung in May 2011. But no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called the "Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet and cause frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
