Operational staff of the Aceh BMKG geological station in Aceh Besar Fany said Tuesday the nine areas including Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra provinces, felt the shocks with its epicenter in Aceh Selatan at 00.55.12 local time.
In Aceh province, the shocks were felt by the people in Aceh Singkil/Subulussalam with an intensity of four of modified mercalli intensity (MMI), in Sinabang (Simeulue) and Banda Aceh, at three MMI.
In the meantime, the quake with its epicenter in Aceh Selatan, 2.81 degrees northern latitude and 97.85 degrees eastern longitude, was also felt by people in Nias (3 MMI), Medan (3 MMI), Parapat and Samosir (3-4 MMI), North Sumatera province.
In West Sumatra, the quake with its epicenter in Aceh Selatan was felt in Padang and Padang Pariaman.
But Fany said there had been no aftershocks in Aceh Singkil 650 kilometers away south of the coast of the province which has a population of 4.6 million.
"The epicenter of the quake was on land, and no aftershocks had been recorded, but we called on the people to stay alert," she added.
The quake had caused some damage of houses, several public facilities like school buildings and public health centers, a child was killed, and some others in Aceh Singkil were hurt.
An 8.9-magnitude quake on December 26, 2004, coupled with a tsunami had devastated a great deal of the coastal area of Aceh province, killed at least 200 thousand people and some others gone missing.
