Jakarta (ANTARA News)- Indonesia and South Korea have agreed to strengthen defense bilateral cooperation as stated in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed here on Friday.

The MOU was signed by the defense ministry`s Director General of Defense Potential Pos Hutabarat and Lee Yong Dae, the director general of Force Policy Bureau.

Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin witnessed the MOU signing.

The MOU was signed after the two governments had held two meetings discussing bilateral cooperation in defense.

"In addition to cooperation in the defense industry which has so far been implemented, the MOU also includes cooperation in education and an exchange program of officers," Hartind Asrin, the defense ministry`s spokesperson said.

Both nations agreed to jointly produce landing platform dock (LPD) ship and submarine between PT PAL shipbuilding company and Daewoo Shipbuilding.

The defense industry cooperation also includes a transfer of technology .

Indonesia and South Korea also talked possibilities to produce KFX/IF-X fighters.

Indonesia is also exploring possibilities to buy T-50 jet fighters from South Korea, while South Korea to buy CN-235 from Indonesia.

South Korean Minister Kim Kwan-jin was scheduled to speak in a seminar on defense industry at the Indonesian defense ministry office.

Indonesia is expected to pick South Korea as the preferred negotiator for its planned purchase of an advanced trainer jet, a Seoul official said as quoted by Yonhap news agency.

It would mark a major breakthrough in Seoul`s efforts to export the T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer jet.

"I heard that Indonesia`s leadership has virtually approved a plan to designate South Korea as preferred negotiator," the government official said on the condition of anonymity. "Only the process of administratively notifying us (of the decision) remains and it seems to be going well."

The state-run Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) developed the aircraft in partnership with Lockheed Martin and began mass production in 2005.
