The epicenter of the quake which struck at 06.32 p.m. was located 21 km west of Nabire, Papua, at a depth of 30 km, the Jayapura office of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.
There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
Papua lies at the meeting point of the country`s two main chains of volcanoes. (*)
