Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Transportation Minister Freddy Numbery has asked transportation officials in Maluku to continue making all possible efforts to tighten oversight of local transportation services to create a more orderly, safer, more secure and comfortable transportation system

"Continuous supervision is a major factor in the provision of quality transportation services, the creation of a more orderly, safer, more secure and comfortable transportation system ," Freddy said in prepared address read out by Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu pn the occasion of National Transportation Day in Ambon Monday.

The minister said all parties involved in the transportation sector, especially the regulators and operators, were responsible for and should be concerned about the safety snf quality of punlic transportation services.

"As regulators, we have to be able to watch over the operators, see to it they abide by the transportation rules. Even though this is not an easy thing to do, we have to do it," he said.

The minister also asked transportation officials to tighten their oversight over the technical execution units in the implementing of their tasks and the operation of transportation services to ensure they fully complied with the existing regulations.

"I hope all parties can see and respond to the efforts of increasing transportation safety in the national interest, not in the interest of any group only ," he said.

He said the public should bs familiarized with public transportation safety to greater extent through various activities.

""Through good and proper familiarization efforts, I believe, we can also help improve transportation services and thus also the community`s welfare," he said.

National Transportation Day was observed by the Maluku Transportation Office in a modest way with a ceremony also attended by the chief of the XVI / Pattimura Military Regoion Command, Maj Gen Suharsono, the chief of the Amon Naval Base Command Commodore Dwi Rahardjo Prihanggono and Ambon Deputy Mayor MAS Lattuconsina.

Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu acted as inspector pf the the ceremony.(*)
