Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State-owned Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) plans to acquire a bank with assets of Rp1 trillion to Rp2 trillion as part of preparatory steps to expand its business and strengthen its micro finances next year.

BNI President Director Gatot M. Suwondo made the statement in line with the bank`s efforts to expand its financing business.

The bank was now exploring the possibility of cooperation with a number of banks engaged in financing the micro financing sector.

"For the time being we will not enter the micro sector. But if the company intends to do so we must first acquire another bank so we will not start the business not from the beginning, he said.

However, he declined to name the bank to be required and the price to be offered.

He said a lack of proper human resources to handle the micro financing business posed an obstacle to the bank.

BNI posted a net profit of Rp2.73 trillion in the first semester of 2011, a 41 percent increase compared to the same period last year when the figure was Rp1.94 trillion.

The amount of credits channeled in the first half of 2011 grew 21 percent Rp126,3 trillion to Rp152.9 trillion.(*)
