Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA News) - A UNESCO team is currently on a five-day visit in Bali, from October 13 to 17, 2011, to check four sites proposed by Indonesia for inclusion in the World Cultural Heritage list.

"The team consisting of two UNESCO experts will closely observe the four sites proposed to become World Cultural Heritage sites in Bangli, Gianyar, Badung and Tabanan," Prof Dr I Wayan Windia, the secretary of the World Cultural Heritage Proposal Team, said here Thursday.

The UNESCO team is accompanied by a team from the cultural and tourism ministry during the visit in Bali.

UNESCO will hold a session next year to discus all candidates and decide whether to accept, reject or revise the proposals.

The Indonesian government has set up the proposal drafting team since 2002, and the proposal has been revised several times at the request of UNESCO.

"After being revised several times and with the visit of the UNESCO expert team to Bali, hopefully the proposal of the four nominated sites could be final and approved by UNESCO," Prof Windia said.

The four candidates are respectively lake Batur located in Bangli District, Ayun Park Temple at Mengwi sub district, Badung District, Catur Angga Batukaru covering Lake Buyan, Lake Tamblingan, Mt Batukaru and terraced rice field Tabanan District, and Pakerisan river basin in Gianyar District.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.

This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
