Taipei (ANTARA News/CNA) - U.S.-Taiwan Business Council Chairman Paul Wolfowitz, who is on a visit in Taiwan, said Wednesday he was delighted to see that the country`s democracy has matured, and he praised Taiwan as setting a good example for China.

Wolfowitz also said the United States should not promote its ties with China at the expense of its links with Taiwan.

The former U.S. deputy secretary of defense made the remarks during a call on Premier Wu Den-yih at the latter`s office.

During the meeting, Wu explained President Ma Ying-jeou`s recent idea of signing a peace agreement with China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has maintained its military deployment targeting Taiwan despite warmer ties between the two sides since Ma took office in 2008.

Wu said there is no schedule for such a peace agreement, and that Ma has stressed Taiwan would not begin to promote such a pact with China unless a certain degree of mutual trust and goodwill between the two sides has been achieved.

There can be no peace agreement unless China recognizes the reality that the two sides across the Taiwan Strait are currently ruled by two different governments, and Beijing stops suppressing Taiwan in the international community, Wu said.

Also on Wednesday, Wolfowitz and council president Rupert J. Hammond-Chambers paid a call on opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen at the DPP headquarters.

According to a DPP statement, Wolfowitz told Tsai, who is the party`s presidential candidate, that the U.S. government stands neutral with regard to Taiwan`s Jan. 14, 2012 presidential election.

Wolfowitz and Hammond-Chambers arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday for a five-day visit. They are scheduled to leave Oct. 22.
