"The presence of Abdallah Al-Senoussi has been indicated in the far north of Niger" near the border with Libya, the source told AFP.
"It`s a report that we have but our defence and security forces have not yet intercepted," the source said. "So his presence in Niger is not yet officially established.
Al Senoussi, 62, is the brother-in-law and former righthand man of slain former dictator Moamer Khadafi.
The ICC issued arrest warrants on June 27 for Kadhafi, his son and longtime heir-apparent Seif al-Islam, who remains at large, and al-Senoussi on charges of crimes against humanity.
Kadhafi, who lorded over the oil-rich north African nation for 42 years, met a violent end on Thursday after a NATO air attack hit a convoy in which he was trying to escape from his hometown of Sirte.
He survived the air strike but was apparently captured alive after a shootout between his supporters and new regime fighters.
